I sit on the grass
in the bright warmth
from the sun
I don't know you
but you share this space
with me for a while
an arrangement of the universe
a fleeting moment
temporal and spatial are simultaneous
we are here,
together
you are a child
I am no longer
you look at me and smile
you say hello
I consider you for a moment
and then I reply
you turn away
you see a branch on a nearby tree
it interests you
you approach it to become acquainted
and you strain your small body to do a pull-up
the branch bends with your weight
it would break with mine
I think about your future
and I regard your youth
someday, you will be old
and when you are old
I will be older
and you will marry, probably
I don't know what else
as I look at you,
I think about my own future
and I feel impatient
