Thoughts

No. 1

there is a moment
when something insignificant
deflates me entirely
cutting me
--to feel the full effect of gravity--
but the falling is invisible
and inexplicable

No.2

have you ever sat twenty feet from another person
you want to spill a million worlds of worries
(sympathetic ear)
striving for a connection

there is poetry in an instrument:
A harp’s strings are “sympathetic”
when one is plucked
there are others who vibrate, too
as if they have been plucked themselves
and the music compensates

you can see clearly (lack of distance) a face that has
bent in sympathy toward you
stiffened by separate hesitations, inhibitions, assumptions
all of them wrong
stemming from something natural
and you resign to the ebb and flow of Nature
a swift current that carries sympathy
in and out
and the face always changes

You decided to fend for yourself
because I forgot you
and the realization was in a moment
that the point of action was too late
I’m already selfish
